Healthcare financing: Hungarian healthcare is financed on different bases: outpatient specialist care is financed on a fee-for-service point system, acute inpatient and rehabilitation service on DRG system, chronic care on patient-days adjusted for the complexity of the case, primary care on patient capitation system. Payment for other services is determined on a case basis.
Medical device industry: The Hungarian medical device market was valued at $666 million in 2007 and is expected to reach $900 million by 2012. The annual growth is estimated at 6.2%. Hungary consumes about 1% of the total EU consumption; in 2005 they consumed €316 million in medical devices. The trade of medical devices is import-led. Around half of the market is supplied by imports. All imported products are required to go through a local distributor, usually one which has been approved by the Institute for Medical and Hospital Engineering (ORKI). Opportunity: privatization of public facilities.
