Healthcare financing: The healthcare sector is in continuous transition. Since 1997 primary health care is financed on a per capita basis. Expenditures of specialized outpatient and inpatient care are fully financed according to the services provided. However, there have been certain limits in the volume of services that can be reimbursed by the territorial sickness funds after 1999. Private expenditure has increased in recent years and is equal to around one-third of total spending in 2007.
Medical device industry: The market for medical equipment is relatively small and mainly supplied by overseas manufacturers. Around 75% of medical devices were imported in 2004. There is a positive growth in the value of import over the past years.
